An important festival of opera and ballet art "Winter Nights" was organized at the theatre. The program consisited of the most famous masterpieces of classical theatre art: "The Nutcracker", ""Rigoletto", "The Swan Lake", "Mister X", "Don Quichot", etc. Leading parts in all ballets and operas were performed by guest stars form the Bolshoi Theatre and abroad, as well as by leading performers of the Sapaev Theatre and its art director Konstantin Ivanov himself! The Mari State Opera and Ballet Theatre was founded in 1969 and has grown into one of the most popular artistic centres of Russia. On our repertoire there are all most famous masterpieces of opera and ballet art: "La traviata", "Swan Lake", "Iolanta", "Giselle", "Seville Barber", "Don Quixote", "Chio-Chio-San", "The Nutcracker", "Rigoletto", "Chopiniana", "Carmen", "La fille malgardee", "Faust", "A midnight summer in dream", "Force of darkness", "The Forest Legend" and other grand performances.
The theatre is distinguished by its constant development and strive for perfection. The troupe refreshes, new plays are staged, our ballet makes tours all over Russia and abroad. For example, during the season 2002-2005 our audience could see 14 new performances, and many of them were evaluated high by theatre critics of St.Petersburg, Moscow and other Russian cities, as well as were extremely successful abroad.
The area of tour activity of the theatre is very wide: South Korea, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Panama, Cyprus, Nicaragua, El Salvador etc. - in all 37 countries for only the latest 4 seasons!
Every year our theatre offers its stage to various all-Russian and international festivals. The most important among them is "Winter Nights". It's being organized for 9 years already, and our public enjoys not only the talent of the leading opera and ballet actors of Russia, but also of the stars from South Korea, Japan, Canada and other countries. Also 4 years there passes festival " In honour of Galina Ulanova ", with participation of stars of world ballet.
Since the year 2001 the art director of the theatre is the Honoured Worker of Art of Russia, the Honoured Worker of Art of Mari El Republic, the principal ballet dancer of the Bolshoi Theatre Konstantin Ivanov.
